Installing a garbage disposal can be a big job. If you’re a DIY homeowner, be sure to follow these tips for a successful project:
- Know the local building codes. Some communities have specific requirements related to disposals, and others don’t allow them at all.
- Turn off the power to the outlet where you’ll be plugging in your new disposal.
- Wire the disposal according the manufacturer’s instructions. This is usually a case of matching colored wires (white to white, green to green, etc.).
- Use plumber’s putty to install the drain flange into the sinkhole.
- Be sure the outlet on the disposal is lined up with the drainpipe.
- Carefully measure the discharge pipe and cut it to length using a hacksaw.
- Install the discharge pipe to the outlet of the disposal and then attach it to the drainpipe.
- Tighten all connections and run water into the sink to check for leaks.
