Even small leaks waste 2,000 gallons of water a year. According to the EPA:
- A faucet leak in an average household can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water each year. That’s enough water to wash 270 loads of laundry!
- Nationwide, household leaks can waste more than 1 trillion gallons annually. That’s enough water to support 11 million homes!
- Faucets and showerheads aren’t the only source of leaks. Worn toilet flappers and other valves can also cause water waste.
- Fixing your leaky faucet can save about 10% on water bills.
Leaking faucets aren’t just a pain in the ear (drip, drip, drip…), overtime it will also cause a stain in your sink. Getting it fixed now will prevent stains from forming, and help you save money on your water bill.
Dripping comes from the handle (not the spout), which is where the faucet valve is located. This valve controls the on/off, volume, and temperature control. Over time, a faucet valve can lose its ability to make a watertight seal, so water will drip out even when turned off.
Repairing the valve will stop the drip. How you fix it depends on the type of valve in your faucet: compression, cartridge (sleeve), ceramic disk, or ball type. You’ll need to turn off the main water to the house before taking the faucet apart to get a look at the valve.
