What’s That Smell?
If you’ve developed a mysterious smell in your kitchen, chances are good it can be traced to your garbage disposal. In theory, garbage disposals clean themselves; food waste is chopped into pieces and flushed down the drain. Over time, though, tiny food particles can stick to the walls of the disposal, the underside of the rubber splashguard, and the blades of even the best garbage disposal.
Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to eliminate most garbage disposal smells.
Step 1: Turn the unit off!
Step 2: Scrub. Use a sponge and dish soap to give the splashguard a good scrub-down.
Step 3: Scrape. Fill the garbage disposal with two cups of ice cubes and 1 cup of rock salt. Turn on the cold water, and run the machine for a few seconds. The coarse texture of the ice and salt will help scrape off any sludge that’s built up on the walls of the disposal.
Step 4: Flush. Plug your drain, fill the sink with water (about half-way), add a drop or two of dish soap or vinegar, pull the plug, and turn on the disposal. This will allow the hopper to fill completely with water and force any residue out of the machine.
Step 5: Freshen. Grind up small pieces of citrus fruits (such as lemon) to leave your garbage disposal smelling fresh.
If these steps don’t fix the problem, or your garbage disposal is no longer working, you’ll want to call a professional.
