Tankless water heaters (also called on-demand water heaters) don’t store hot water in a tank. Instead, they supply hot water only when it’s needed.
Pros and Cons of Tankless Water Heaters
Pros:
- Saves money in the long run (According to gov, they are 24%–34% more energy efficient than storage tank water heaters.)
- Takes up less space than a storage tank water heater (smaller, and can be wall-mounted)
- Lasts longer (almost double that of a storage tank water heater)
- Provides hot water on demand (2-3 gallons/minute)
Cons:
- Higher upfront cost
- Home may need to be retrofitted (added cost)
- Homes with electric utilities may need to be upgraded (electrician fee)
A few things to consider before making the decision to go tankless:
- How much demand for hot water is there in your household?
- Do you run gas or electric? An electric model will need the proper voltage, gas-fired models require venting.
- Where will it be installed? Tankless water heaters must be placed within 50 feet of a power source (although they can be mounted on either an interior or exterior wall)
Natural gas tankless water heaters are about 23% more efficient than a traditional water tank, according to the Department of Energy, and can save your household about $108/year in energy costs. With your purchase, you may qualify for a $300 federal tax rebate. Your state may offer additional incentives.
Unless you have professional-level skills, installing a tankless water heater is not a do-it yourself project.
