Don’t Let a Damaged Plumbing Stack Jeopardize Your Home’s Wastewater System
The main plumbing stack of your home (also known as a drain-waste-vent or DWV) serves two purposes:
- It carries waste to a public sewer or septic system
- At the top of the stack it vents noxious gases outside.
Did You Know: Malfunctioning stacks can damage property and cause significant health risks.
Older homes typically have cast iron or galvanized steel stacks, which tend to rust and corrode over time. Since the 1970s, stacks have been constructed from more durable PVC pipe, but they can still develop problems such as clogging. The main drain line, which connects the plumbing stack to the public sewer line, can also be a trouble spot, as tree roots can penetrate the line and cause wastewater to back up into your home. And even if all your pipes are in good shape, plumbing stack vent problems can occur if careful consideration wasn’t given to how your fixtures were connected to the DWV.
Plumbing stack repairs vary in complexity and cost. If the sewer smell you’re experiencing is caused by birds using your vent as their nesting spot, an inexpensive plumbing stack cover will likely solve the problem. If it’s caused by an improperly vented fixture, though, the repair will likely be more complex and require the help of a licensed professional.
