If your garbage disposal’s making unusual noises—or no noise at all—chances are you’ll be able to tackle the fix without the help of a plumber.
DIY Garbage Disposal Troubleshooting
If your garbage disposal isn’t working at all, it may not be getting power. Check the circuit breaker, and then press the reset button at the bottom of the unit. If that doesn’t get it going again, you probably need to replace your disposal.
If your garbage disposal is making a humming sound but doesn’t appear to be grinding, something’s likely stuck under the impeller blade. Turn off and unplug the disposal. Carefully reach inside to see if you can free the object. If you can’t, use the hex-wrench located under the unit to gently crank the disposal back and forth until it spins freely.
If your garbage disposal is rattling, something has probably fallen in that doesn’t belong there—such as a measuring spoon or piece of broken glass. Turn off the unit and unplug it, then try to retrieve the object with tongs or pliers.
If your garbage disposal is leaking, try replacing the gaskets at the drain connections and/or tightening the bolts.
