Terrible Noises and Awkward Silences
If your commercial waste disposal is malfunctioning, its noises (or lack thereof) offer clues for repairing it. A rattling garbage disposal is usually attempting to grind up something it shouldn’t, like an eating utensil or bone. If it’s humming, on the other hand, there’s likely just too much waste in the unit—especially if you’re trying to dispose of starchy items like potato peels and onion skins. To fix either of these problems, turn off the disposal, unplug it, and carefully reach inside to remove the object(s). You may need to crank the hex-wrench located on the underside of the unit to get it moving.
If you’re hearing more of a squeal from your commercial garbage disposal, there’s a good chance its bearings are shot and you’ll need a replacement unit. Likewise, if your disposal is completely silent and pressing the reset button doesn’t get it going again, the motor may have failed.
Take Care of Your Disposal
To avoid unnecessary commercial garbage disposal repairs, take some preventive measures:
- Use only cold water.
- Operate your unit in the correct order: water on, disposal on, then add waste.
- After using the disposal, run cold water through it for several seconds to flush it out.
- Avoid using chemicals in sinks with disposals.
