St. Louis PEX Pipe Replacement Experts Since 1985
PEX tubing is made from crosslinked HDPE (high density polyethylene) polymer. It has been used in Europe since about 1970, and was introduced in the U.S. around 1980. PEX plumbing has many advantages over other materials. PEX is:
- Flexible. PEX plumbing expands and contracts, making it more resistant to bursting. It’s flexibility also means it can bend around corners, rather than having to use a coupling or fitting (which means less chance for leaking).
- Resistant to scale and chlorine
- Durable. It can hold up to long-term stress exposure and harsh chemicals such as acids and alkalis.
- Cost efficient. Because PEX requires fewer fittings, the chance for necessary repairs is diminished.
- Energy efficient. PEX tubing does not transfer heat as readily as copper, so water flows more quietly through it. It also eliminates that “water hammer” noise associated with copper pipe systems.
- Safe. It doesn’t require soldering, so health hazards involved with lead-based solder and acid fluxes is diminished.
- Tolerant. It holds up to both extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures.
For all of these reasons, PEX tubing is becoming more and more popular in the U.S. In many applications—incluing radiant heating systems—it is essentially replacing copper pipe
Before making the decision to replace your plumbing with PEX pipes, homeowners should understand that, like with most products, there are some drawbacks to PEX pipes:
- PEX plumbing can not be used outside
- PEX plumbing cannot be recycled
- Because PEX provides an impermeable membrane, there is a very small possibility that your water can become contaminated.
