Of all the after-dinner cleanup nightmares, a non-functioning garbage disposal is among the worst. Whether you’re hearing a rattle, hum, squeal, drip, or (mysteriously) nothing at all, here’s how to make sense of the clatter:
Rattles. A loud rattle or clanking noise most likely means something has fallen into your sink that doesn’t belong there. Be sure to turn off your garbage disposal before reaching inside with a pair of tongs or—carefully—with your hand. Once you’ve removed the object, the rattle should disappear.
Hums. If you flip the switch and all you hear is a hum, something is preventing the spinning parts of your unit from functioning. Turn off your garbage disposal to avoid burning out the motor and unplug the unit. Carefully reach inside and attempt to free the object. If necessary, a hex-wrench can be used to manually spin the disposal. (Look underneath the unit for the hex-shaped hole and wrench.) Plug the unit back in, press the reset switch, turn on the water, and run the disposal.
Squeals. A squealing garbage disposal requires some extra TLC, as it likely has a failed or failing bearings or motor. If that’s the case, you’ll want to call in a professional plumber.
Dripping. If your garbage disposal is leaking, check connections at the drain lines and dishwasher and tighten the bolts. If that doesn’t fix the leak, it’s time to call in a professional.
Silence. If your disposal simply won’t run, try pressing the reset switch on the bottom of the unit. If that doesn’t work, check the circuit breaker. Still no luck? You might need a new motor. A professional plumber is your best bet.
