Bathtub and shower faucets are made up of a few key components: a handle, a pressure balancing valve and a thermostatic valve. Although both valves are hidden behind the wall, they play an important role in the performance and longevity of your tub or shower faucet.
A quick look at what each of these components do:
Pressure balancing valves help keep the water temperature stable if the water pressure should suddenly drop (the flush of a toilet, and the starting of a dishwasher or washing machine are the main culprits). This valve protects the user from the risk of scalding water.
Thermostatic valves adjust the cold and hot ratio water settings to maintain the desired original temperature.
When you’re shopping for a new faucet, you’ll have to choose the type of handle. If you’re simply replacing an existing faucet, it’s best to choose the same style as your existing handle. In new construction or a complete remodel you have more options.
Single Handle vs. Two-handle Faucets
Single handle: These faucets allow users to quickly adjust the water temperature with one hand, and tend to be the most popular choice.
Two-handle: These faucets have a more traditional aesthetic, allowing users to control hot and cold water temperatures separately.
In addition to color and finish options, you’ll also need to select the style of faucet:
Knob handle. The most traditional style.
Lever handle. A more common, and modern choice
Cross handle. Perhaps the most modern of the three types.
