Dripping, Leaking, or Malfunctioning Faucet? We’ll Fix It Right!
Dripping faucets are not only irritating; they’re also wasteful and can leave unsightly water stains on your tub or shower floor. Fortunately, most faucet leaks have a simple cause—a malfunctioning valve—and can usually be repaired by replacing a few inexpensive parts. A few tips:
- Turn off the water to the faucet or to your entire home, before removing the handle and “collar.”
- Use needle-nose pliers to pull the cartridge from the center of the valve. Particularly stubborn cartridges may require a special cartridge puller tool.
- Take any parts you need to replace to the hardware store with you to be sure you’re getting an exact match.
If your tub and shower have separate faucets for hot and cold water, you won’t be replacing a cartridge. Instead, you’ll unscrew the entire stems from the bathroom pipes. Worn washers are most often responsible for leaks with stem-style faucets, so try replacing those first. If that doesn’t do the trick, new stem assemblies and faucets probably will. Always take your used pieces to the hardware store to ensure you pick up the correct replacement parts.
If your shower or tub faucet is still dripping after repairing the valve, you may have a problem with the plumbing behind the shower wall. If that’s the case, it may be time to call in a licensed professional.
