St. Louis Pipe Replacement Experts since 1985
The plumbing in your home is one of several different types:
Regardless of the specific type of plumbing in your St. Louis home, you’ve most likely landed here because you need pipe replacement. There are two main reasons for this:
Outdated pipes
If you have an older home that was built prior to 1970, there’s a good chance your pipes are made from galvanized steel. An easy way to test this is to simply turn on the hot water. If your water pressure is low, you may have galvanized hot water pipes that have corroded.
A sewer line leak
All the plumbing in your home begins and ends at your street. All of the plumbing in the street is owned by the water district. The pipes on your property belong to you – which means you pay for repairs/replacements. A quick check for this problem: turn off all the water inside your house and check your outside meter. If the dial still moves, you’ve got a leak somewhere in your plumbing system.
How long will your home’s plumbing last? Take a look at the St. Louis City or St. Louis County home inspection report you received when you bought your home. If it’s galvanized steel, you’ll need to update your plumbing. If you can’t find the report, have a licensed plumber inspect the plumbing.
Did You Know: White build-up on showerheads and faucets is a sign of hard water.
Regular maintenance means keeping your drains clear. A few best practices to keep in mind to avoid pipe replacement:
- Try not to use chemicals to unclog a drain. These can actually do more harm than good, eroding cast-iron drainpipes.
- Keep food scraps out of the kitchen drain
- Install screens over shower and tub drains
- Pull hair out of bathroom drains every week or so to prevent buildups
- Dispose of liquid grease properly: Pour into a sealed container, cool, and throw in the trash. Never pour liquid grease down the kitchen drain, as it will cool and clog your pipes.
- Know where your home’s main water shut off valve is so that you can turn it off immediately should there be a leak.
- Don’t leave hoses connected to outdoor spigots over winter months.
- Consider having pipe insulation added to plumbing in cold areas of your home such as the garage and basement to keep pipes from freezing.
- Fix problems quickly. Even small leaks can cause pipes to corrode more quickly, which can cause significant damage.
