About the Homes in Maplewood
Maplewood’s earliest homes were built in the Maplewood and Greenwood subdivisions at the end of the 19th century. Today, the average age of homes in Maplewood is 34 years, while the most historic are well over 100 years old. The architectural style of houses in Maplewood is quite diverse and includes everything from wood clapboard Victorians, Arts & Crafts style bungalows, gingerbread brick bungalows and modern townhomes.
While these homes are rich with character, they also might require updated plumbing. Clay pipes, cast iron, and galvanized steel were all commonly used prior to 1980, so odds are that if your home was built before then, you’ll need to replace your old drainpipes with PVC plastic systems.
Clay sewer lines were popular up until the early 1900s. Clay was heavy, so these sewer lines were comprised of short sections requiring lots of joints to fit the pieces together. Clay is also brittle, so these sewer lines are known for cracking or breaking over time, especially where the pieces are joined.
Cast iron sewer pipes last a lot longer (80 – 100 years) than their clay counterparts but are prone to rust over time. And because these pipes rust from the inside out, it can be difficult to spot at a glance. If your Maplewood home has cast iron plumbing and is more than 70 years old, you’ll want to have a plumber inspect your drainpipes and consider pipe lining to keep your home’s plumbing and water in top condition.

Maplewood Sewer Lateral Program
A residential sewer lateral is the sewer pipe that runs from your home’s foundation to the sewer main. The sewer pipes inside your home can become clogged or crack due to tree roots or other issues. In much the same way, the main sewer drain that leads all the way to MSD can break or clog, and that can be extremely cost prohibitive to fix (upwards of $15k). Thankfully, the community of Maplewood has a Sewer Lateral Repair Program to assist with the cost of repairing any broken section of a sewer lateral from outside your’s Maplewood home’s foundation wall all the way to MSD’s main sewer line.
If you experience slow drains, foul odors, or low water pressure, you could have a clogged drain pipe. Knowing where the blockage is located is important, because if the clog is somewhere along the sewer lateral, the Maplewood Sewer Lateral Program may cover the entire repair cost! As the homeowner, you are responsible for hiring a plumber to try to unclog or open the sewer lateral, and if that doesn’t work, to perform a camera drain inspection. Maplewood Plumbing provides you with a video of your inspection that you can submit with your application. Click here for details.
