Homeowners are used to maintaining their homes to keep them looking nice and running smoothly. But some maintenance tasks are easier than others to remember. Things like mowing the lawn, cleaning the windows, replacing air filters and cleaning out the gutters are standard tasks on every homeowner’s to-do list. But sometimes, cleaning the drains in your home can get overlooked—at least until you’re stuck with a clogged drain.
Drains Like it Hot
To keep your bathroom sinks clean and clear add these tasks to your home maintenance to-do list:
Weekly: Run very hot water down your kitchen and bathroom sinks
Monthly: pour a small amount of bleach into the sink and let sit for one hour before running water
Bathroom drains get blocked for different reasons than your kitchen drain, which is why they should be treated differently.
Did You Know: Overuse of drain cleaners can do more harm than good to your home’s plumbing. The chemicals work because they’re strong. But over time, their strength eats away at your pipes. If you do use them, do so sparingly, and remember to read all of the instructions – not all cleaners work on all types of pipes (i.e. PVC vs. Copper).
If you do have a clogged drain in your bathroom, whether it’s your sink, shower, tub, or all of the above, there are a few things you can do to take care of the problem yourself.
Pass the Salt
Step One: Pour one tablespoon of salt into the drain,
Step Two: Pour ¼ cup of plain white vinegar into the drain
Step Three: Let sit for one hour
Step Four: Run hot water for 30-60 seconds to clear any loosened dirt and debris
Step Five: Repeat once for maximum effectiveness
If your bathroom drain is still clogged after completing these steps, it’s time to contact a licensed professional.
