Your Water Line Installation Experts Since 1985
Can you imagine life without ice cubes? Not just for chilling food and cooling drinks, ice is used to reduce swelling, relieve sinus pressure, dull pain…even to remove gum from fabrics.
Thanks to icemakers, we have a seemingly endless supply. But that requires a connection to your home’s main water line.
Can I install my own refrigerator water line?
You can, if you’ve got the skills and experience of a plumber. If you do plan to attempt this project yourself, keep in mind the following tips:
- Shut off your main water supply to your house.
- Run ¼” OD (outside diameter) tubing from the cold water pipe to the refrigerator.
- Be sure to loop a large coil (at least six feet long) behind the refrigerator to allow for moving the appliance from the wall when necessary.
- Once connected, feed the water line through the back of the cabinets and connect.
- Cover the end of the tubing and flush into a water receptacle before connecting to the refrigerator.
When it comes to water line tubing, you have a few choices:
Plastic: the most economical as well as the easiest to work with, it can be prone to splits and leaks.
Flexible copper: more durable, but can sometimes puncture or kink.
Braided stainless steel: The most durable choice… also the most expensive.
Keep in mind that the cheapest route may be the most costly if you end up with destructive leaks down the road. Some hardware store kits use parts that are often associated with poor water flow, unpleasant tasting water, or undetected leaks that may be quite costly.
